「○○に基づいて、…」のような表現を論文の説明で用いることがある。ここで based on をしばしば間違えて、用いる例が多くみられる。注意するべき点は、
based on は形容詞句を導く。
on the basis of は副詞句を導く。
という点である。例を挙げると、
[間違った表現：] Based on the Landau theory, the magnetic susceptibility is investigated.
[正しい表現：] On the basis of the Landau theory, the magnetic susceptibility is investigated.
である。based on は形容詞句を導くので、
We give a treatment based on the Landau theory.
のように用いるのが正しい。based on が形容詞句を導いて、treatment を修飾しているからである。
