1. In May of 1998, the HUBEX Field Observation Headquarter established in Hefei, capital city of Anhui Province. The main function of the headquarter is to issue the command for starting and ending of the Intensified Observation Period (IOP), monitor the progress of the IOP, and coordinate all aspects during the field observation period.

2. The Opening Ceremony of HUBEX Headquarter was held on June 5, 1998. Professor ZHAO Bolin of Peking University, the HUBEX principal scientist in China side, and Professor Takao Takeda of Nagoya University, the HUBEX principal scientist in Japan side chaired the opening ceremony and inspected the headquarter.

3. The Intensive Focus Observation (IFO) period (May to August, 1998) started from May 1, 1998, according to the HUBEX implementation plan. The HUBEX weather radar network, dense rainguage network, Shouxian comprehensive observation station and hydrological observation items begin to monitor the weather systems and carry on rainfall-event observations. The June 1-3, June 11-12 rainfall events in HUBEX region were captured by the HUBEX observation system.

4. On June 9, 1998, Dr. ZHANG Wenjian, the director of HUBEX headquarter has issued the command that the HUBEX Intensified Observation Period (IOP) will start on June 11, 1998. The IFO period will last for 42 days for the following items:

  1)Intensified radiosonde observations (4-times/per day) for 36 stations in HUBEX Alpha region and A-area.

  2)Intensified surface meteorological observations (24-times/per day) for 12 stations in HUBEX gamma region.

5. June 11, 1998, the Doppler radar network begins to carry on rainfall-event observations and some valuable data has been obtained.

6. During May 1998, the planned first period of KU-AWS observation was accomplished.

7. An in-situ meeting chaired by director of HUBEX headquarter will be held on June 19, 1998, for inspection and preliminary analysis of the Shouxian comprehensive observation items.
